How do these tours work?

Each trip is different but expect to spend 6 or 7 days in either France or Spain. Guides will pick you up at the pre-arranged start time (normally 12 pm) on the first day of your trip. On average each trip has 2 guides but there may be more if the group is larger. You'll be taken to your hotel or to the bikes to enjoy the day's first ride, normally a distance of about 8-12 miles (15-20 kms). Expect to stay in high end hotels changing hotels every other day. Bags are moved for you. The day's activity is a ride or a hike with a wine tasting or some event mid-route. A van will shadow the group so if you don't feel like doing anything active,  we will shuttle you to the day's attraction and if you're riding or hiking and get tired, just let your guide know you want to be picked up.

How challenging are the bike rides?

Our trips are designed for the average bike rider, so expect moderate difficultly and on average 15-25 miles a day (25-40 kms) with several stops along the way. If you want more, there are always optional rides. If you want less, a van follows the group if you've had enough.

Are there hills?

Yes. Unless biking along a Dutch canal, there are hills but each trip has different terrain. Expect larger hills, but not mountains, in wine growing regions (Beaujolais, Rioja Spain) because grapes thrive on slopes rather than flats. None of our trips go through mountains so expect to get some exercise, but nothing like the Tour de France.

What's included?

Normally your hotel accommodations, guides, 4 dinners, 2 lunches, your bike and helmet are included but please consult your trip's detailed itinerary for additional information. Trip prices do not include airfare, nor any wine, bar, or minibar charges.

How big are your groups?

Expect 6-10 people on a normal tour and 10-16 people on an event-based tour such as tours going to the French Open or the Cannes Film Festival. On average, there are 2 guides per tour but we'll often add another guide if the group is larger.

What if I hold up the group or what if I want to bike faster than the group?

You won’t hold anyone up because every rider has a map and route instructions with detailed information concerning the day’s ride. This allows you to ride/hike at your own pace. Your guides will explain in detail that day’s route. Choose to stay with the guide or explore at your own pace. If you need assistance, the van is always a phone call away.

What is the average age and fitness level on your tours?

The average client is 40-45 years old (so expect a range of 35-65). Most travelers are active professionals, not professional athletes so don't expect Lance Armstrong to come on any of our trips.

Shoud I train before the tour?

Depending on your exercise routine (or lack thereof), we recommend you ride your bike for a few hours a week leading up to your trip. Cycling works different muscles than running or aerobics so riding to get the rust out will make the cycling portion of your tour that much more enjoyable.

Will I enjoy a Spyns tour?

Absolutely yes! Your trip with us will be an unforgettable and life-changing experience. We’re the best in the industry.

Send us more questions at info@spyns.com and we'll post it here complete with an answer.
